Design For Manufacturing
Design for manufacturing is particularly important because it may directly influence the quality of a PCB production. This is where quality, design, and manufacturing are closely combined all together. It is stated that 80% of quality issue during mass production are due to design, especially in China where handmade products are still quite often.
Design for manufacturing is used to design product and optimize mass production so as to reduce cost, time, and resources during manufacturing and mass production. Always, an PCB designer may start optimizing his work when the basic functionality from product requirement has been achieved by the design.
Design for manufacturing in China is useful because it determines the cost and turnaround. The importance is also emphasized by the fact that about 70% of manufacturing costs of a product (e.g. raw materials, processing, and assembly) are determined by design decisions, with production decisions (e.g. machine tool selection) responsible for only 20%.
The great benefit of design for manufacturing is particularly to reduce cost of a product during mass production, reduce mistake by operators, diminishing time to produce by removing useless extra activity and designing product or some of their sub-parts adequately to those optimization guidelines.
