Differences between Cells and Batteries
Cell and battery are common components that always found in electrical products. A cell is a single unit that converts chemical energy into electrical energy, while a battery is a collection of cells. It is said that each cell contains two electrodes and an electrolyte, a substance that reacts chemically with each electrode, generating an electrical current. A battery with more gathered cells can increase more electrical voltage.
Batteries are classified by electrolyte type. Dry cell batteries contain electrolytes dispersed in a dry or porous substance packed between the two electrodes. In a wet cell battery, the electrolyte is a free-flowing liquid. Contain caustic chemicals like lead, wet cell batteries can burn skin, release dangerous fumes and contaminate groundwater. It is said that disposable alkaline batteries are not environmentally hazardous, that’s why lots of cities encourage residents to discard them in household trash. Other batteries, particularly of the wet cell type, contain heavy metals and dangerous substances which are able to cause serious harm to the environment, people and animals.
