How to Calculate PCB Prices
In fact, PCB manufacturers calculate prices from 4 aspects, they are listed as follows:
1.Board material costs: different board materials have various costs;
2.Drilling costs: number of holes and hole size all affect drilling costs;
3.Fabrication costs: different board fabrication process requirements lead to different fabrication process difficulties, and this will influence the PCB costs;
4.Overhead and labor costs: this cost depends on the cost control capability of each factory.
In this article, we will give a brief introduction about aspects that influence board material costs and fabrication costs.
As to board material costs, there are three main aspects:
a.Plate material: FR-4, CEM-3 are common double-sided and multilayer plate materials, and their prices are related to the plate thickness and the thickness of copper foil in the plate. FR-I, CEM-1 are common single-sided plate material, and its price is very different compared to double-sided, multi-layer board.
b.Plate thickness: Common thicknesses are 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, 1.2, 1.5, 1.6, 2.0, 2.4, 3.0, 3.4. The prices of different thickness of common plate have no big differences.
c.Copper foil thickness: The copper foil thickness is generally divided into 18 (2/1 oz), 35 (1 oz), 70 (2 oz), 105 (3 oz), 140 (4 oz) and the like.
As to fabrication costs, there are four main aspects:
a.Wires on the PCB board are really counted, if the wire density is below 6mil and the wire width is 0.15mm, then the cost will be higher.
b.If there is a BGA on the board, then the cost will rise relatively. Some factories calculate based on the BGA quantity, while some based on BGA size and process difficulty.
c.Different PCB surface technology have different prices. There are some common ones, such as lead spray tin (hot air leveling), OSP (green board), spray pure tin, tin, silver, gold, etc.
d.The higher the standard of fabrication technology, the higher the price will be. IPC-2 is commonly used, besides, IPC-3, enterprise standard, military standard, etc., are also widely used.
